Domestic Workers Abuse
Many people have servants, whether
they’re females or males, who work in their service for a wage. These could be
drivers, maids, cooks…etc. Many people employ others to do these jobs in their
homes. Therefore we need to think about how best to deal with them, with help
of the teachings of the Chosen one, peace and blessings be upon him.
Some people, perhaps out of a
misunderstanding of the religion, might presume that if their servant is not
Muslim that they somehow have the right to verbally or physically abuse them. And
this is a calamitous disfigurement of the teachings of Islam and the good
etiquette of Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him.
The Prophet, peace be upon him,
said: Your servants are your brothers. You are responsible for their food,
drink, and clothing and do not burden them with more than they can handle. This is the basic minimum, that one
has to afford his servant, his rights when it comes to food, drink, and
clothing and that he does not overburden him/her with work.
If one seeks excellence, if one
desires for our Lord to have mercy on him, then he ought to pardon others.
The Prophet, Mohammed, peace be
upon him, said:
“He who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy”
